Ladies and Gentlemen,
We share a common goal and opportunity to make the Baltic Sea area into a forward-looking world-class region at the top of Europe. To achieve it effort must be made from all stakeholders – Member States, regional and local municipalities, the EU, pan-Baltic organisations, financing institutions, enterprises and non-governmental bodies. Cooperation within the Baltic Sea Region is horizontal – it addresses the key challenges of sustainable environment, prosperity, accessibility, safety and security. Safe and reliable energy supply is a basis for fruitful cooperation in all the mentioned areas.
Electricity networks of the Baltic States are gradually integrating into Nordic and European electricity networks and markets by implementing interconnection projects foreseen in Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan (BEMIP) – Estlink2, NordBalt, LitPolLink and Estonia-Latvia third interconnection. Electricity market integration also requires full implementation of the EU internal market rules including unbundling of transmission system operator. Latvenergo Group successfully accomplished unbundling at the beginning of 2012.
One of the priorities in the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region is to achieve good environmental status of the Baltic Sea. Care for the environment is also one of the cornerstones of Latvenergo Group’s daily operations. Our efforts are focused on environmentally friendly activities, reducing or eliminating environmental risks. We are proud of our achievements in generating electricity from renewable energy sources. More than 70% of our total electricity output was generated using renewable energy sources last year.
The BDF annual summit is a great opportunity to meet, discuss and agree on a common vision and action for promotion of external competitiveness and cooperation inter alia in the power industry. Let’s define our common input in the prosperity of the Region!
I am looking forward to meeting you – stakeholders of the Baltic Sea Region!
