I look forward to welcoming you in Latvia later this month for the 15th annual Baltic Development Forum. Baltic policy makers, business leaders and academia will gather in Riga for an exciting, high profile event. The Forum is well known for its wide scope – business, governance, environment, culture and education. It forms a part of our wider efforts to build a truly integrated region.
The current times are challenging – on the one hand the Baltic Sea region is affected by the unfavourable situation in the rest of Europe, whereby we seek to maintain growth despite difficult conditions for our main trading partners. On the other hand, we must not lose sight of the longer term – we need to find ways to increase competitiveness, develop new sustainable industries, create jobs and attract investment. Given the seeming contradictions that we sometimes face in addressing each of those challenges, it is important to strike the right balance.
I believe this Forum will provide every participant with new ideas, insights and cooperation partners for achieving further growth in our region.
